Who is Malik Ahmad Khan, the new Punjab Assembly Speaker?

He is expected to not only efficiently manage the House as Speaker but also safeguard the party’s interests with broad support

“Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has formally assumed the job of Punjab Assembly Speaker, marking an end to the unpredictability surrounding the assembly’s leadership. His commencement event took place as he pledged his oath of office, administered by the outgoing Speaker, Sabtain Khan.”

The completion of the vote-counting process was an important milestone in Punjab’s political landscape. Malik Ahmad Khan, of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was elected as the Punjab Assembly’s new Speaker. His victory reflects a strong mandate from assembly members.

Malik Ahmad Khan’s election as Speaker was confirmed by an amazing score of 225 votes out of a total of 327 votes. This overwhelming support indicates assembly members’ confidence in his capacity to effectively manage the legislative body.

Malik Ahmad Khan comes from Khudian town in Punjab’s Kasur district, and his village, Khai Hithar, is on the outskirts. His grandfather was a local Zaildar.

His father, Malik Muhammad Ali Khan, was active in politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the Senate from January 23, 1986 until March 20, 1988. He was known as Malik Muhammad Ali Khan Khaiwala, after his village. Notably, he served as Pakistan’s Acting President for 31 days while the President and Senate Chairman were unavailable.

Malik Ahmad Khan followed in his father’s footsteps and studied law in London after attending Aitchison College. He started politics in 2002 when he was elected to the Punjab Assembly as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid. However, his 2008 election effort with the PML-Q was unsuccessful, prompting his departure from the party. His relationship with Shehbaz Sharif improved over time, encouraging his decision to join Sharif’s party.

Malik Ahmad Khan maintained his political career by gaining seats in the Punjab Assembly in the general elections of 2013, 2018, and 2024. Following 2018, he served as the spokesperson for Shehbaz Sharif’s government and later took on responsibilities related to law.

After the no-confidence motion against previous Prime Minister Imran Khan, Malik Ahmad Khan was appointed Special Assistant to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for Defense in the new government.

Malik Ahmad Khan, described as a calm man who rarely loses his temper, is a skilled lawyer who can persuade judges with compelling arguments. He has a law chamber on Zafar Ali Road near Gymkhana in Lahore.

When the Punjab government switched from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to PML-N, Malik Ahmed Khan was expected to become Chief Minister, but Hamza Shehbaz Sharif assumed the role, partly due to his better acceptability among classmates.

Given Malik Ahmad Khan’s understanding of the Punjab Assembly’s principles and traditions, as well as his friendly contacts with numerous figures, including PTI’s Mian Aslam Iqbal, he is expected to not only effectively administer the House as Speaker, but also to protect the party’s interests with broad support.
